FAST FOOD

Scotland is no different to England as far as fish & chip shops, takeaways and fast food restaurants are concerned. They adorn the streets of most towns and cities throughout Scotland.

One thing you wouldn’t expect to see in your local English fish and chip shop is deep-fried Mars bars or battered ice creams. Once believed to a popular urban myth, such delicacies are apparently more truth than fiction, and this is worrying some health experts. One study found that battered Mars bars, with a side order of chips, are big business for some fish and chip shops in Scotland; with some reportedly selling 200+ a week.

The Scot’s fascination with deep fat frying doesn’t end there. Deep-fried Haggis is also becoming a popular fast food. Instead of boiling the combination of meat and sheep’s stomach, they are instead throwing the whole lot (neeps, tatties and all) in to the deep fryer.

This love with all things deep-fried has given Scotland a bit of a reputation for diet-based and coronary diseases.
